The book

After her sister stops visiting, Maren begins a precaution the sister taught her and never explained. Salt on every sill. A chair left pulled out. The porch light on until morning, though the street is not the kind of street that requires it.

The neighbors decide she is grieving badly. Maren lets them. The precaution is working, which is the part she cannot put in a sentence a neighbor would believe.
